Give It Back

A PSA poster designed to encourage composting.

PROBLEM

Composting is an important part of ensuring the environment has a way to recycle and continue using its nutrients so it does not become depleted. A poster encouraging composting is needed and must be presented in a way that is intriguing and compelling.

INSIGHT

While many understand the importance of composting, simply saying it is something we should do is rarely enough to be convincing. That is why this messaging focuses on it simply being a requirement for being a part of the environment. It frames composting not as a luxury or something that makes you a better person, rather it says it is just necessary if we want to continue living on this land and using its materials.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

The primary text to draw the viewer in is made out of bell pepper that is being fed to isopods, like what would be seen during the composting process. This grounds the work and makes it feel more pressing and real than any digital design.

OUTCOME

The result of this poster is an incredibly persuasive piece that encourages viewers to reconsider that food scraps are not just a second thought, but a requirement to be considered when living on this planet. The intense and vague languaging helps to draw audiences in, and provdies harrowing information and statistics to ensure they will move forward in doing their part.

DELIVERABLE

This poster consisted of a plethora of research and sketching ahead of composition to ensure a thoughtful and successful design. When moving on to production, letters were carved out of red bell pepper and arranged in a legible and interesting manner within the ispod enclosure. After the isopods began to break down the letters, photos were taken and edited to create spaces to add additional information regarding the message of composting. The text is intentional ominous and vague, bringing the viewer in. The final poster was printed on glossy heavy weight paper (16in × 20in).

ATTENTION TO DETAILS

To further solidify the message of composting being a vital part in a cycle, the text is layed out to create a cyclical motion withthe eyes.

Photographing the isopods was quite challenging, they tend to be nocturnal and are very shy. This process took some time because while they were at their peak activity levels, it would be very dark out resulting in poor quality photos. Finding this compromise in daylight, while also positioning my camera in their relatively small enclosure without disturbing them took a lot of patience and care.
